Hello Oppo, I’m on the hunt for a daily driver that has to get me to work and nothing else. I will give zero fucks about this car besides mechanical maintenance. I want to keep the boring miles off of my WRX and slap them all into a disposable crap heap.

So I come to you. What would you buy? My budget is 2,000 USD and under. I know this is the place to go for a question like this.

Ford Taurus, but go over it with a fine tooth comb. Make sure it is a Duratec and isn't a rusty crapcan. Depending on your location this may be easy. Also make sure the power steering works.

Ford Focus hatchback with a stick. Mazda Protege 5 with a stick.

A pogo stick, with a stick.

Proteges are VERY reliable, although they can have a lot of rust depending on the environment in which you live - friend of mine put 400,000kms on theirs with basic maintenance. It wouldn’t pass inspection the following year due to body rot though, but the mechanicals were 100% fine.

If you could find a higher-mileage ‘06-’10 Accent, they got highly-regarded reliability - pretty simple, no fancy features, so not much to go wrong. Mine just rolled over 103,000kms and it’s been dead reliable. They’re not as bad as people make them out to be, and as a cheap commuter, they’re fine. They apparently had very good rust-proofing as well.

I’ll second the older Civic comments too, but they can also have rust - ours was dead reliable (family used to have a 2000 auto sedan), but 14 years in Nova Scotian salt air meant it succumbed to rust 2 years ago (we did undercoat it, but the body rusted out).

Comfy, cheap, and reliable. Speaking from experience. We have a 2002 around 225k miles with no major problems since we got it (it had ~60k)

A Cavalier. They’re dirt cheap, reliable, and cheap to fix when they do break.

Everything that has been recommended so far is good. The early 2000s Hyundai Elantra is a good car too. Pretty damn simple and fuel efficient.

A few others alluded to this: Anything with a Ford/Mazda 2.3L engine. So a few good choices that should be under $2k and can be had with a stick if you want - be sure to check which years each of these had the Mazda L/Duratec 2.3: Mazda3, Mazda6, Focus, Escape, Fusion, Ranger. A Fusion/Milan might be hard to find for $2k but there is an ‘08 on my local CL asking $2400. Early Mazda3's can also have major rust problems.

If you don’t need rear seats in your commuter, I’d absolutely see if you can find an ‘01+ Ranger in your price range. Having a truck to pick up parts for your fun car would be an added bonus.

As long as they are taken care of they are good. Myself I have two that were not and they have been hell. The newest possible with least amount of miles possible is the best.

I had a 2001 Cavalier we bought for $1300 with about 100k on it that went for 3 years ~40k miles with no issue. Learned to drive stick in it; manual everything, good mileage.
